Das Institut ist im Schlüsselbereich der Biotechnologie tätig. Deren Anwendungen betreffen neben dem Gesundheits- und Umweltbereich, auch die Lebensmittelindustrie und die erneuerbaren Energien.

Das Institut bietet Dienstleistungen für die gesamte Entwicklungskette (Optimierung, Qualifikation) biotechnologischer Verfahren an, ausgehend von der Identifizierung, der Charakterisierung und der Änderung des Produktionsstamms, über die Kultur von mikrobiellen und Säugerzellen im Reaktor bis hin zur Isolierung von biotechnologisch hergestellten Produkten.
