The Unit is a regional leader in the training of students and executing applied research in biotechnology for public and private partners. The research in the Unit spans a broad range of topics in industrial Biotechnology, with a focus on solving relevant industrial problems to support the Biotech companies. The general and practical approach combines molecular and cellular biology and process engineering. Various bioanalytical solutions are developed thanks to the Institute's analytical expertise. The quality of research is guaranteed through the participation in national and international networks. The research and development topics are geared towards production and practical applications. Work is focused on biomolecule production by biotechnological processes, bioprocess development and optimization (strain engineering and selection; development of processes), and product isolation and development (downstream processing).
Today, the Biotechnology Unit houses 5 research gourps with a high level of interaction : Prof. Simon Crelier - Downstream processing Prof. Manfred Zinn - Bioprocessing Prof. Fabian Fischer- Biocatalysis Prof. Marc Pfeifer- Bioanalytics and Diagnostics Prof. Sergio Schmid - Molecular biology
